Following a long day of work and child-rearing, I sat down last night with a tall glass of milk and a stack of the finest mass-produced cookies on the market: Keebler’s Chocolate Lovers Chips Deluxe.
Now look: I know there are better cookies to be eaten. Matt’s Chocolate Chip Cookies are fantastic. The Pepperidge Farm Soft-Baked Cookies are delicious. But sometimes you don’t want to pay $3 for eight cookies. That’s why Keebler gets my vote more often than not.
Last night, though, something was wrong. TheĀ Keebler Chocolate Lovers Chips Deluxe cookies I have loved for years and years…didn’t taste good. Something was off. And to quote Donald Trump, it was very bad. Believe me.
So I checked the ingredients. And, like any person outraged about a small change in his daily life, I took to Twitter:
The Keebler Elves have not responded to my tweets as of this hour, but I’ll update the post if I hear anything. For now, the best I can tell is Keebler reworked their recipe because a (small) number of people have a problem with high fructose corn syrup. That’s despite the FDA stating:
We are not aware of any evidence, including the studies mentioned above, that there is a difference in safety between foods containing HFCS 42 or HFCS 55 and foods containing similar amounts of other nutritive sweeteners with approximately equal glucose and fructose content, such as sucrose, honey, or other traditional sweeteners.
So that’s where we stand. I have one more package of the original Chocolate Lovers Chips Deluxe in the cabinet and after that I suppose I’ll be looking for a new favorite mass-produced cookie. Any suggestions?
UPDATE:
Ernie Keebler has responded…
